Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them

Al Franken, "Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them" [Audiobook]
Highbridge Audio | Unabridged | mp3 64 kbps | September 2003 | ISBN: 1565117964 | Language: English | 192MB

From Wikipedia:

Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right is a book of political commentary and satire by comedian and political commentator Al Franken, published in 2003 by Dutton, a subsidiary in the Penguin Group. It was written with the help of a volunteer group of fourteen Harvard students known as "Team Franken." The book's subtitle is an ironic parody of Fox News' tagline "Fair and Balanced." Fox sued Franken over the use of the phrase in a short-lived lawsuit, which has been credited with increasing the sales of the book.

Lies is one of several books published in 2003 written by American liberals challenging the viewpoints of conservatives such as Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter, and Bill O'Reilly. These books by Franken and fellow authors such as Joe Conason, Michael Moore and Jim Hightower were described by columnist Molly Ivins as the "great liberal backlash of 2003."

Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them largely targets prominent Republicans and conservatives, highlighting what Franken asserts are documentable lies in their claims. A significant portion of the book is devoted to comparisons between President George W. Bush and former president Bill Clinton regarding their economic, environmental, and military policies. Franken also criticizes several pundits, especially those he believes to be the most dishonest, including O'Reilly and Hannity.

In Lies, Franken divides American media into two groups: the mainstream media, which attempts to be objective, and the right-wing media, which does not. Franken writes that "The mainstream media does not have a liberal bias, ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, The New York Times, The Washington Post, TIME, Newsweek, and the rest at least try to be fair." Franken notes that the mainstream media do have biases toward sensationalism, the easy story, and soft news. Franken says the right wing media, including Fox News, The Washington Times, and the editorial page of The Wall Street Journal, "are not interested in conveying the truth." He argues that they exist to further the cause of American conservatism by advancing stories and themes that work to the benefit of conservatives and to the detriment of liberals.[2]

Franken seeks to debunk the claim that the mainstream American media are liberally biased. Franken believes that the claim of media "liberal bias" is a myth used by conservative politicians. Propagating this myth, Franken asserts, serves three functions. First, it creates reluctance among mainstream media outlets to cover issues that conservatives don't want them to, for fear that they will be accused of having a liberal bias. Second, it allows conservatives to deny or dismiss reports in the mainstream media, regardless of whether they are true, because they have discredited the source already. Third, attacking the liberal media can be effective at increasing conservative voter turnout.

Richard Matheson - I Am Legend

Richard Matheson - I Am Legend
Publisher: Blackstone Audiobooks | ISBN: 1433203316 | 64 kbps mp3 | 118 MB

A terrible plague has decimated the world, and those who were unfortunate enough to survive have been transformed into blood-thirsty creatures of the night. Except, that is, for Robert Neville. He alone appears to be immune to this disease, but the grim irony is that now he is the outsider. He is the legendary monster who must be destroyed because he is different from everyone else. Employing a stark, almost documentary style, Richard Matheson was one of the first writers to convince us that the undead can lurk in a local supermarket freezer as well as a remote Gothic castle. His influence on a generation of bestselling authors--including Stephen King and Dean Koontz--who first read him in their youth is, well, legendary.

Agatha Christie - Death Comes As The End

Read by Emilia Fox, "Agatha Christie - Death Comes As The End" [Audiobook]
mp3 | 24Kbps | 67mb | 7hrs | Unabridged | Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Ltd (May 1992) | ISBN: 0061003689

Between them, Agatha Christie and Emilia Fox manage to make ancient Egyptians sound believable. Christie delivers a tale of deception and murder in an extended family of upper-caste Egyptians of 2000 BC. She includes just enough historically accurate information to ground the story without making it a treatise on how people once lived. Fox wisely chooses not to attempt Egyptian accents. Instead, she reveals social strata by using a range of accents from different English classes; it's a surprising choice that works well. Her pacing is easy to listen to, and she shades character beautifully--rarely have the sniveling sounded so uxorious, the good so innocent, or the murderous so deceiving.

Timothy Leary

Timothy Leary
Audiobook Lectures | MP3 | 32Kbps | 6 files, 5-27MB each | Genre: English Spoken Word, Psychedelic

Timothy Leary will be remembered by all of us of a certain age for his pioneering psychedelic drug research and use, and as one of the first people whose remains have been sent into space. An icon of 1960s counterculture, Leary is most famous as a proponent of the therapeutic and spiritual benefits of LSD. He coined and popularized the catch phrase "Turn on, tune in, drop out." Sadly, few have followed in his wake, as official research on the effects of psychedelic experience is more or less at a standstill. Here are some of his words, which I hope may encourage more people to themselves become psychonaughts. The first is from an LP (remember those?) which begins 'anyone over 40 must not listen to this record...' - and as I'm almost there, time I think to pass this on to younger folk.... There's also a couple of further talks - 'Any Reality is an Opinion' and 'How to operate your Brain'. Though a little dated, I hope these recordings will be of interest to some.

I would recommend Terence McKenna (see my upcoming posts, assuming my computer holds out) for practical and a more up to date philosophy on psychedelic exploration. Remember we're not talking about threshold doses at a rave with friends here (though that's a lot of fun too!) but instead the careful self-administering of meaninful amounts of psychedelic substances, often alone, or with a 'sitter' in the next room (whose ONLY task is to just reassure you that things are cool if you get freaked). I'll try and get Terence's stuff up on Avaxhome in the next few weeks, meanwhile enjoy this flavor of the '60's, what we did with our brains before the internet!

Take care everyone.

Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There, 1871). Varias adaptaciones cinematográficas combinan elementos de ambos libros.

Robert Ludlum's The Altman Code: A Covert-One Novel - Audiobook

Robert Ludlum's The Altman Code: A Covert-One Novel - Audiobook
Read by Don Leslie | MP3 | ISBN:1559278986s | 51 Mb | 6 hrs | 24kbps
Publisher: Macmillan Audio | Abridged edition (June 17, 2003)

This latest product from the efficient assembly line of the Ludlum thriller factory has been somewhat overtaken by events: it revolves around a Chinese freighter carrying weapons-grade chemicals to the port of Basra in Saddam Hussein's Iraq. There are also a couple of neat subplots, including an elderly American being held prisoner in China who claims to be the real father of U.S. President Sam Adams Castilla, and the dirty doings of a giant international business combine called the Altman Group, whose members make Ian Fleming's old adversaries look like the operatives of a corner candy store. All of this provides plenty of action and intrigue for the folks at Covert-One, the top-secret agency which now operates out of a private yacht club in Anacostia, Md.-close enough to the White House for President Castilla to drop in on agency boss Fred Klein of an evening with just one Lincoln Town Car full of Secret Service folk. Most of the heavy lifting, actionwise, falls on the capable shoulders of Covert-One's Col. Jon Smith, who as "a medical doctor and biomolecular scientist" as well as an army officer is the ideal combination of brains and muscle. He needs both, as well as the patience to endure dialogue like this from Castilla: "I don't know whether you realize it, but China is one of the signatories of the international agreement that prohibits development, production, stockpiling, or use of chemical weapons. They won't let themselves be revealed as breaking that treaty, because it could slow their march to acquiring a bigger and bigger slice of the global economy." Exactly.

Tom Clancy- The Bear & the Dragon Audiobook

Tom Clancy- The Bear & the Dragon Audiobook
Read by Frank Muller | MP3 | 24kbpss | ISBN:0375415831 | 46 Mb | 6 hrs
Publisher: Random House Audio | Abridged edition (September 12, 2000)

Tom Clancy- The Bear & the Dragon Audio book- Power is delightful, and absolute power should be absolutely delightful--but not when you're the most powerful man on earth and the place is ticking like a time bomb. Jack Ryan, CIA warrior turned U.S. president, is the man in the hot seat, and in this vast thriller he's up to his nostrils in crazed Asian warlords, Russian thugs, nukes that won't stay put, and authentic, up-to-the-nanosecond technology as complex as the characters' motives are simple. Quick, do you know how to reprogram the software in an Aegis missile seekerhead? Well, if you're Jack Ryan, you'd better find someone who does, or an incoming ballistic may rain fallout on your parade. Bad for reelection prospects. "You know, I don't really like this job very much," Ryan complains to his aide Arnie van Damm, who replies, "Ain't supposed to be fun, Jack."
But you bet The Bear and the Dragon is fun--over 1,000 swift pages' worth. In the opening scene, a hand-launched RPG rocket nearly blows up Russia's intelligence chief in his armored Mercedes, and Ryan's clever spooks report that the guy who got the rocket in his face instead was the hoodlum "Rasputin" Avseyenko, who used to run the KGB's "Sparrow School" of female prostitute spies. Soon after, two apparent assassins are found handcuffed together afloat in St. Petersburg's Neva River, their bloated faces resembling Pokémon toys.

The stakes go higher as the mystery deepens: oil and gold are discovered in huge quantities in Siberia, and the evil Chinese Minister Without Portfolio Zhang Han San gazes northward with lust. The laid-off elite of the Soviet Army figure in the brewing troubles, as do the new generation of Tiananmen Square dissidents, Zhang's wily, Danielle Steel-addicted executive secretary Lian Ming, and Chester Nomuri, a hip, Internet-porn-addicted CIA agent posing in China as a Japanese computer salesman. He e-mails his CIA boss, Mary Pat "the Cowgirl" Foley, that he intends to seduce Ming with Dream Angels perfume and scarlet Victoria's Secret lingerie ordered from the catalog--strictly for God and country, of course. Soon Ming is calling him "Master Sausage" instead of "Comrade," but can anybody master Ming?

The plot is over the top, with devastating subplots erupting all over the globe and lurid characters scaring the wits out of each other every few pages, but Clancy finds time to insert hard-boiled little lessons on the vileness of Communism, the infuriating intrusions of the press on presidential power, the sexual perversions of Mao, the poor quality of Russian pistol silencers ("garbage, cans loaded with steel wool that self-destructed after less than ten shots"), the folly of cutting a man's throat with a knife ("they flop around and make noise when you do that"), and similar topics. Naturally, the book bristles like a battlefield with intriguingly intricate military hardware.
