Communicating and Mobile Systems: the Pi-Calculus

Richard A. Berk “Communicating and Mobile Systems: the Pi-Calculus"
Cambridge University Press | 1999-06-15 | ISBN: 0521658691 | 161 pages | Djvu | 6 MB

Communication is a fundamental and integral part of computing, whether between different computers on a network, or between components within a single computer. In this book Robin Milner introduces a new way of modelling communication that reflects its position. He treats computers and their programs as themselves built from communicating parts, rather than adding communication as an extra level of activity. Everything is introduced by means of examples, such as mobile phones, job schedualers, vending machines, data structures, and the objects of object-oriented programming. But the aim of the book is to develop a theory, the pi-calculus, in which these things can be treated rigorously. The pi-calculus differs from other models of communicating behaviour mainly in its treatment of mobility. The movement of a piece of data inside a computer program is treated exactly the same as the transfer of a message--or indeed an entire computer program--across the internet. One can also describe networks which reconfigure themselves. The calculus is very simple but powerful; its most prominent ingredient is the notion of a name. Its theory has two important ingredients: the concept of behavioural (or observational) equivalence, and the use of a new theory of types to classify patterns of interactive behaviour. The internet, and its communication protocols, fall within the scope of the theory just as much as computer programs, data structures, algorithms and programming languages. This book is the first textbook on the subject; it has been long-awaited by professionals and will be welcome by them, and their students.

WIPO Magazine, June 2008

The bimonthly WIPO Magazine (available in English, French and Spanish) aims to inform readers about WIPO-led activities, and to show intellectual property, creativity and innovation at work across the world. New Rice for Africa Climate change, drought, desertification, soaring food prices, hunger …Nowhere do these inter-twined threats to development menace more starkly than in Africa.

To mitigate the threats, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called, at the annual meeting of the Commission for Sustainable Development in May, for a fresh generation of agricultural technologies to usher in a second green revolution, - “one which permits sustainable yield improvements with minimal environmental damage and contributes to sustainable development goals.”

Plant-breeding technologies – often combining traditional knowledge with cutting edge biotechnological techniques – are already making real impact in meeting the challenge. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)’s Rice Market Monitor reports that rice production in Africa has risen consecutively for over seven years, and is forecast to rise further in 2008 to 23.2 million tonnes. A major factor in this growth has been the success of a new type of rice, known as the New Rice for Africa – or Nerica.

The new rice was the result of years of work by a team of plant breeders and molecular biologists led by Sierra Leonean scientist Monty Jones at the West Africa Rice Development Association (WARDA – now the Africa Rice Center). When Dr. Jones set up the biotechnology research program in 1991, some 240 million people in West Africa were dependant on rice as their primary source of food energy and protein, but the majority of Africa’s rice was imported, at an annual cost of US$1 billion. WARDA’s objective was to produce a rice variety which was better suited to the harsh conditions in African. ...

Linear and Nonlinear Multivariable Feedback Control: A Classical Approach

Oleg Gasparyan, "Linear and Nonlinear Multivariable Feedback Control: A Classical Approach"
Publisher: Wiley | Pages: 354 | 2008-03-21 | ISBN: 0470061049 | 7 MB | PDF

Automatic feedback control systems play crucial roles in many fields, including manufacturing industries, communications, naval and space systems. At its simplest, a control system represents a feedback loop in which the difference between the ideal (input) and actual (output) signals is used to modify the behaviour of the system. Control systems are in our homes, computers, cars and toys. Basic control principles can also be found in areas such as medicine, biology and economics, where feedback mechanisms are ever present.

Linear and Nonlinear Multivariable Feedback Control presents a highly original, unified control theory of both linear and nonlinear multivariable (also known as multi-input multi-output (MIMO)) feedback systems as a straightforward extension of classical control theory. It shows how the classical engineering methods look in the multidimensional case and how practising engineers or researchers can apply them to the analysis and design of linear and nonlinear MIMO systems.

This comprehensive book

* uses a fresh approach, bridging the gap between classical and modern, linear and nonlinear multivariable control theories;
* includes vital nonlinear topics such as limit cycle prediction and forced oscillations analysis on the basis of the describing function method and absolute stability analysis by means of the primary classical frequency-domain criteria (e.g. Popov, circle or parabolic criteria);
* reinforces the main themes with practical worked examples solved by a special MATLAB-based graphical user interface, as well as with problems, questions and exercises on an accompanying website.

The approaches presented in Linear and Nonlinear Multivariable Feedback Control form an invaluable resource for graduate and undergraduate students studying multivariable feedback control as well as those studying classical or modern control theories. The book also provides a useful reference for researchers, experts and practitioners working in industry

Semi-active Suspension Control: Improved Vehicle Ride and Road Friendliness

Semi-active Suspension Control: Improved Vehicle Ride and Road Friendliness
Springer | 2008-06-03 | ISBN: 1848002300 | 310 pages | PDF | 4 MB

Semi-active Suspension Control provides an overview of vehicle ride control employing smart semi-active damping systems (controlled dissipative elements which only require low energy input). These systems are able to tune the amount of damping in response to measured vehicle-ride and handling indicators.

Two physically different dampers (magnetorheological and controlled-friction) are analysed from the perspectives of mechatronics and control. Ride comfort, road holding, road damage and human-body modelling (nonlinear visceral response in particular) are studied.

A multidisciplinary approach is adopted throughout the book. Sound mathematical modelling is balanced by a large and detailed section on experimental implementation, where a variety of automotive applications are described offering a well-rounded view of the application of such systems. The implementation of control algorithms with regard to real-life engineering constraints is emphasised.

The applications described include semi-active suspensions for a saloon car, seat suspensions for vehicles not equipped with a primary suspension, and control of heavy-vehicle dynamic-tyre loads to reduce road damage and improve handling.

GPS Theory, Algorithms and Applications

GPS Theory, Algorithms and Applications
340 pages | ISBN: 3540727140 | September 14, 2007 | PDF | 15.2 MB

This reference and handbook describes theory, algorithms and applications of the Global Positioning System (GPS/Galileo). It is primarily based on source-code descriptions of the KSGsoft program developed by the author at the GFZ in Potsdam.

The theory and algorithms are extended and verified for a new development of a multiple functional GPS/Galileo software. Besides the concepts such as the unified GPS data processing method and the numerical solution of the variation equations, as well as the general ambiguity search criteria reported in the first edition, there are several highlights reported. Such as the equivalent principle and its applications, the theory of independent parameterisation, the diagonalisation algorithm, etc. Mathematically rigorous, the book begins with the basics of coordinate and time systems and satellite orbits, as well as GPS observables, and deals with topics such as physical influences, observation equations and their parameterisation, adjustment and filtering, ambiguity resolution, data processing, and the determination of perturbed orbits.
