BBC - Hiroshima

BBC - Hiroshima
English | Xvid | 720×416 | AC3 | 192kbps | 700MB

Information

It was the defining moment of the 20th Century - the scientific, technological, military, and political gamble of the world’s first atomic attack. This drama-documentary attempts to do what no other film has done before - to show what it is like to live through a nuclear explosion, millisecond by millisecond.

Set in the three weeks from the first test explosion in New Mexico to the eventual dropping of the bomb, the action takes viewers into the room where the crucial political decisions are made; on board the Enola Gay on her fateful voyage; inside the bomb as it explodes; and on the streets of Hiroshima when disaster strikes. Parallel storylines interweave, unfolding the action from both US and Japanese perspectives, and revealing the tensions and conflicts in the actions and minds of people who were making history. Special effects recreate the reality of the mission - even going inside the workings of the bomb - and archive film replays the horrific aftermath.

CONSISTENCY WINS THE DOUBLE
This final year of the decade gave Ferrari the coveted 'double' - the Drivers' Championship, with Jody Scheckter in his first year with the team and Gilles Villeneuve as runner-up, and the Constructors' Cup as well. Winning three races each and seven second places between them, the duo failed to score only once, in Argentina. It was consistency rather than outright domination that did the job though, and many fans thought Villeneuve should have been champion. No-one of course guessed at the time, but Ferrari would have to wait until the following century to regain the Drivers' title.
For season-long speed the Williams-Cosworth FW07, with Saudia Airlines sponsorship, led the field, but seven retirements for Alan Jones blunted the attack despite his four victories. Team-mate Clay Regazzoni gave Frank Williams his first-ever GP victory at Silverstone but also endured five retirements. Ligier joined the enemy, used Cosworth power and, for a brief period, looked to have the best car, with Laffite winning the first two GPs of the year and new man Patrick Depailler triumphing in Spain. However, their form slumped when, after Monaco, Depailler sustained injuries in a hang-gliding accident and missed the rest of the season.
Perhaps the most technically interesting result was the winning of the French GP by the twin-turbocharged Renault Elf RS in the hands of Jean-Pierre Jabouille. It was the first-ever GP win for a turbocharged car and only the second in modern times for an all-French car and team.
The year was significant for the change in the championship scoring system, introduced to help keep the result open until the final races. Previously the organisers of the North American rounds, held in October, felt cheated when the championship was, as often happened, decided by the Italian GP the previous month. Now the season was divided into two halves, with the drivers counting their best four scores from each. This meant that, supposing Jones had won all eight races in the second half, he would not necessarily have taken the title. As it was he won four to Scheckter's three but had only four points from the first half, so even under the old system his final tally would have been lower.
Meantime, ground-effects and the search for more downforce continued apace. One development again pioneered by Lotus, Chapman and his engineers, was a measure to seal the underbody airflow within the wheelbase, namely rigid body 'skirts'. Thanks to clever interpretation of the regulations, they made contact with the track surface by moving vertically in slides. Unfortunately the Lotus 80 proved unsuccessful despite these skirts, introduced for the Spanish GP. Although Andretti finished third in that race, after a couple more tries Chapman reverted to the Type 79, now without JPS sponsorship but backed instead by Martini and Essex Petroleum. But the 79 had lost its edge.
Perhaps the most significant political move was the re-constitution of the GPDA (Grand Prix Drivers' Association) and, regarding safety, at least 1979 was free from fatal accidents.

BBC - In Search Of The Trojan War

BBC - In Search Of The Trojan War
English | Divx | 1440-1575 kbps | AC3 | 192kbps | Part~700MB

Homer wrote his epic, The Iliad, in 700 BC – 500 years after the Trojan Wars were supposed to have taken place. On what did he base his story? Where was Troy situated? Did Paris and Helen really exist? What was the significance of the famous wooden horse? Can archaeology help us to recreate a Bronze Age citadel which stood at the cross roads of the major trading routes of the day? Did the Trojan war ever happen,or was the city destroyed by natural causes? It’s fascinated poets, painters and Hollywood directors for over 2,500 years.

Join charismatic historian Michael Wood as he combs the cradle of civilization – from Greece to Turkey – and points beyond – Germany, Ireland and England – in search of archaeological evidence that may validate the fantastic battles immortalized in The Iliad. Over six hour-long programmes, Wood marshals the disparate strands of evidence to present as fully rounded a portrait as possible of both the historical and the legendary city of Troy, its central place in Western culture, and the Mycenaean Age itself. From Schliemann’s initial cavalier bulldozing of the mound at Hisarlik, to Homer’s epics, the Hittite Empire, and the role of slave women, Wood journeys back and forth across the Aegean and elsewhere to illuminate the dawn of Western literature, myth, and history. The trail is not easy to follow and Michael hits various dead ends and dramatic twists before he finds an answer to the question which has obsessed scholars for more than a century.

This six part series was originally broadcast in 1985 on BBC Two and won the Silver Plaque Award at the Chicago International Film Festival.

Genre : Horror/Thriller | ftp2share 4 mirrors

The original Hongkong version of The Eye by Pang Brothers tells a story about a cornea transplant that goes horribly wrong. “Visually impressive, frightening and original, The Eye is a kind of supernatural thriller that we don't see very often.”

At the age of two, Wong Kar Mun went blind. Eighteen years later a new and risky corneal transplant operation restores her vision, but a series of inexplicable events leads her to believe there is much more than meets the eye to her newfound gift of sight. Mysterious black-clad figures seem to foreshadow sudden deaths, and horribly disfigured denizens of another side haunt her everyday existence. Unable to define her own identity, she comes to understand that whenever she looks into a mirror she doesn't see herself but instead sees another woman: Ling, the original owner of the corneas. It seems that Mun has inherited Ling's fate and the misery that comes with the ability to see more than what she wants to behold.

Genre: Progressive Metal

Review by greenback @ Prog Archives:

WOW! This pure prog metal album certainly belongs to my all-time top 10 prog metal albums so far! For those who like bands like Shadow Gallery, Eternity X and Dream Theater, then this album is definitely a good one to acquire.

First of all, let's talk about the rhythmic electric guitar: it has a rather powerful and razor sound; it is often very scattered, despite it is all the time very synchronized and disciplined, which gives this record a special metal trademark style; it is also not rare to hear quite sophisticated faster passages, being symphonic a bit like Yngwie Malmsteen's work. Like Dream Theater, the electric rhythmic guitar here is not extremely monolithic, so that the other instruments can easily be appreciated; however, it is recommended to not turn the volume too loud because the miscellaneous keyboards, often in the background, are rather delicate & essential, and thus need a low volume level in order to be fully appreciated.

The lead vocals have MANY different tones, and some remind me a bit Black Sabbath's Tony Martin; some of the miscellaneous backing vocals have a clear Queen's influence (Bohemian Rhapsody).

The magic, charming and ear candy modern keyboards are really addictive; there are many excellent keyboards solos a la Dream Theater, and some floating keyboards often give an awesome heroic ambience to the whole.

The excellent drums are quite varied and never bland; the bass does a pretty good job, even if we feel it is not there to steal the show.

The tracks contain many mellow, dreamy and magic passages; melodies are omnipresent in every track. When the razor rhythmic guitar is absent, there are very refined acoustic and distortion free guitars.

Many bits evoke mysticism, amplified by the serious, existential & religious lyrics. The tracks of this record often consist in a constant alternation between progressive, structured & melodic metal bits, and mellow, magic, charming, religious, beautiful, delicate & slightly sentimental ones.

The album contains 2 epic tracks: "The Accolade" and "The Divine Wings of Tragedy": "The Accolade" contains a jaw-dropping mix of lush & floating organ + unforgettable lead & backing vocals; "The Divine Wings of Tragedy" is nothing else than a VERY progressive metal gem lasting nearly 21 minutes!

A couples of more mellow passages contain violin, catchy piano and bells to enhance the beauty, the elegance & the variety of this record.

Enchanted, Disney’s blend of live action, traditional animation and CGI , tells the story of Giselle, an archetypal Disney Princess who is forced from her 2D-animated world of Andalasia into real-life New York City. The film makes numerous references to Disney’s past and future works along with the cameo appearances from some of Disney’s characters. Starring Amy Adams (“Junebug”) and James Marsden (X-Men “Cyclops”)
.

With a fine cast and fun in-jokes, Disney’s ENCHANTED is sure to cast a spell over both children and adults. It begins with a 2-D animation sequence reminiscent of the company’s beloved past. Surrounded by dozens of cute animals, Giselle (voiced and later played by Amy Adams) sings about her desire to find her one true love. Meanwhile, a handsome prince (James Marsden) overhears her, and they meet and fall in love. In many Disney movies, this is where the story ends, but ENCHANTED is just starting out on its journey. The prince’s wicked stepmother (Susan Sarandon) can’t stand to lose her throne, so she pushes Giselle down a well, and the beauty ends up in the real world. Gone is the animated fantasy, and a live-action Giselle lands in the middle of Times Square in New York City. Her optimism and perkiness put her at odds with the New Yorkers she encounters, but she gets help from a cynical divorce lawyer (Patrick Dempsey) as she waits for her prince to rescue her. Fans of Disney classics from SLEEPING BEAUTY to BEAUTY AND THE BEAST will be glad to see their favorite films referenced in ENCHANTED. Jodi Benson (the voice of Ariel in THE LITTLE MERMAID) makes a brief appearance, and the evil queen threatens to kill Giselle with a poisoned apple à la SNOW WHITE. Though it reminds the audience of past favorites, ENCHANTED boasts its own script that is at once intelligent and heartwarming. But the true highlight of the film is the acting by the fairy tale couple. Marsden (HAIRSPRAY) couldn’t be funnier as the charming prince, while Adams (an Oscar nominee for 2005’s JUNEBUG) gives dimension to the heroine. As a result, ENCHANTED is a film that deserves to sit on a shelf with Disney’s classics. Rotten Tomatoes
